Calgary Citizen newsletter Tuesday Oct. 15

Good morning !

It’s officially pumpkin season and our friends over at Chef’s Plate ranked 40 pumpkin patches, rating them out of 100 by analyzing factors including: average visitor ratings, total followers, Google searches between September and October, cost for a family of three, dog friendliness, and the availability of additional attractions like corn mazes or petting zoos. The Calgary Farmyard ended up ranking second on the list of 40 behind only Edmonton Corn Maze in the top spot. Here is the full study.

If you’re on the hunt for pumpkins in Calgary, check out our community spotlight section on Thursday for a few more spots to check out—other than Calgary Farmyard of course.

Rutledge Hangar: A century-old aviation marvel now a vibrant hub for Calgary's youth

What Rutledge Hangar looked like back in the day // Submitted

Amidst Calgary's bustling Renfrew neighbourhood lies a grandiose marvel that dates back to the roaring ‘20s—the magnificent Rutledge Hangar. Situated on a vast 1.2-hectare plot of land, this three-storey building features exposed Douglas fir wood and roof decking, which is a rarity in modern architecture. The hangar holds great heritage value for its representation of early 20th-century airplane hangar construction techniques in Canada.

Historical significance: The Rutledge Hangar was part of the city's first publicly operated airport, the Stanley Jones Airport.

Adaptive reuse: The Rutledge Hangar has undergone extensive renovations and upgrades to transform it into a hub for the community.
