THURSDAY EDITION  ·  Advertise  ·  Events  ·  Subscribe

Good morning, Calgary!

I hope you have your Saje rollers and ibuprofen ready, because we're in for the Calgary-est of weather changes over the next couple of days, with a chance of gasp snow! Don't let that stop you from getting out, though. There is SO much to do this weekend.

A 120-year-old house in Crescent Heights is packed wall to wall with local art, Cavalry FC plays for the CPL Shield at Spruce Meadows on Sunday, and a couple of Calgary bars have gone full Halloween.

When the Pink Door Show opens a Crescent Heights house to the public Friday, the 30 Alberta artists on its walls are the first group in its new year-long Artist Incubator Program. They get three shows a year, critique and business training on things like pricing, to help them make a living from their work. The free show runs Oct. 23 to 25 at 223 7 Ave. N.E.

The weekend is where they get seen. Last year's show drew more than 1,400 people, and Artistic Director Kersten Hardy Fairleigh told the Calgary Citizen most artists sold more there than at almost any other show they do in Calgary. "The public overwhelmingly is very interested and wants to be able to connect with local artists and to purchase original art," she said.

When the Milwaukee Brewers open the World Series against the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday, a Calgarian will be helping run their pitching staff. Jim Henderson, who played on the very first Okotoks Dawgs team in 1996, is Milwaukee's pitching coordinator. Game 1 is Friday at 6 p.m. Calgary time.

His own road to the majors was a long one. Drafted in the 26th round in 2003, Henderson didn't make his debut until 2012, at 29, and was the Brewers' closer the next year. "It's the epitome of resilience, is what it is," said Jeff Duda, the Dawgs Academy pitching coordinator and a longtime friend. Henderson still drops by the Dawgs facility most Christmases to talk to the academy kids.
