Calgary cold snap causes issues as it hits -40, elsewhere, a Delta plane goes down in Toronto

However, the weather is expected to improve later in the week, climbing back to a high of 5C on Thursday and double-digits on Friday. // Krista Sylvester

As Calgary experienced an extreme cold warning this Family Day long weekend, it’s finally expected to warm up to warmer temperatures later this week. Environment and Climate Change Canada shows that wind chill values hovered around -40C with extremely cold wind chills, which caused many issues across the city. Meanwhile, the cold caused several water main breaks across the city. The extreme cold caused Calgary’s Chinook Blast to have to move its outdoor events inside.

In Toronto, a Delta Airlines plane with 80 people on board coming in from Minneapolis crashed on landing and ended up on its roof, injuring about 18 people, according to CTV News. The crash caused the diversion of hundreds of planes for the rest of the day, which also resulted in delays and cancellations in Calgary. Several videos and photos on social media appeared to show the Bombardier overturned on the airport grounds.
