The Calgary Flames Foundation is giving $100,000 to Canadian Armed Forces families affected by the deadly fire at CFB Wainwright.
Four soldiers were killed and dozens more were hurt when a fast-moving fire overwhelmed them during a training exercise at the base, southeast of Edmonton, on Saturday, Oct. 17.
Where the money goes
The donation goes to the CFB Wainwright Support Fund, set up by Support Our Troops. It's meant to help families with urgent needs, financial gaps and unexpected costs after an injury or loss, on top of existing military benefits.
Part of the proceeds from the Flames Foundation 50/50 draw at Monday's home game against the Toronto Maple Leafs also went to the fund.
Robert Hayes, president and CEO of Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corp., said in a news release that the organization stands "with Canadians in mourning the four soldiers who lost their lives at CFB Wainwright."
