The City of Calgary is selling two pieces of land to non-profit housing providers who plan to build about 200 affordable homes, the City announced Tuesday.
Liberty Housing Organization plans approximately 105 homes at 155 Cirrus Close N.E., in Midfield Heights.
Siksika Off-Reserve Affordable Housing (SORAH) plans about 95 homes for Indigenous Calgarians at 3010 36 St. S.E., in Dover.
"The Dover project will see the construction of close to 100 townhomes," Max Lloyd, SORAH's general manager, said in the City's news release.
The City is putting $3.9 million in land value into the two projects, and it says each dollar of City land has drawn nearly $4.50 from the provincial and federal governments.
"The need for affordable housing in our city is greater than ever," Mayor Jeromy Farkas said in the release.
One site left over
A third site, at 15 Santana Hill N.W., was also up for sale. None of the applications met the program's requirements, so the City will offer it again in a later round.
Not a done deal yet
Both providers still need to finish due diligence and meet conditions before the sales close, including land use changes where needed and development permits. The City didn't give a timeline for construction.
The bigger picture
This is the fifth round of the City's Non-Market Housing Land Sale program, which started in 2019. It has led to nearly 1,000 permanently affordable homes across 18 developments. Of those, 280 have opened and more than 700 are in planning or construction.
