The kitchen is at the heart of the fire station as firefighters build camaraderie one meal at a time

Firehall No. 1 downtown.

The camaraderie at fire halls starts with preparing food together and eating as a family. The dictionary definition of camaraderie means mutual trust and friendship among people who spend a lot of time together—and the perfect example of that is our local firefighters.

Teams of firefighters work together as a family for 24 hours at a time, says Carol Henke, public information officer for the Calgary Fire Department. There are generally four platoons at each fire hall who rotate shifts. What many people probably don’t realize though, is firefighters do everything together for those 24-hour shifts, including grocery shopping and eating together.

It’s all part of the camaraderie, Henke says.

"Each station and each platoon does their own thing, but for most of them, they all put their money in for the shift or the month, and that goes towards meal planning," she explains, adding the money all comes from their own pockets, not taxpayers.

"They’re supporting local businesses, grocery stores, sometimes they’re buying from local restaurants or businesses in their community."

Local firefighters contribute nearly $1,000,000 per year of personal money to local grocery establishments.
