Good morning {{ first name}}!
Today's lead story about a dog abandoned in a backpack outside a soccer club hits close to home. I adopted a dog just a month ago, and I can't imagine anything happening to him. It's a stark reminder that our pets depend on us completely, and stories like this one are hard to read—but important to share.
We hope you've been keeping warm through this Arctic blast. Windchill values around -40°C are nothing to mess with. If you're looking to escape the cold, we've got an indoor activity for you, plus one way to embrace winter if you're feeling brave enough to venture outside.
Alberta businesses diversify beyond U.S. markets, while Noah and Olivia remain the top baby names in the province.

Pomeranian found abandoned in backpack outside Calgary soccer club
A seven-year-old Pomeranian named Coco was found abandoned in a backpack outside the Calgary Southwest United Soccer Club on February 7, and the Calgary Humane Society is asking for the public's help identifying who left him there.
The reddish-brown dog was discovered in poor physical condition with acute medical needs outside the facility at 10450 50 Street SE. Brad Nichols, director of enforcement with Calgary Humane Society, called the abandonment egregious given the dog's condition and said the organization has more information about Coco than is typical in these cases.
Nichols said he's confident someone knows this dog and where he came from. Abandonment and medical neglect are offences under both the Animal Protection Act and the Criminal Code, punishable by up to a $20,000 fine, lifetime prohibition from owning animals, and two years in jail.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Calgary Humane Society at 403-205-4455 or through the online report cruelty portal at calgaryhumane.ca.

Noah and Olivia reign as top baby names in Alberta for another year
Alberta parents welcomed more than 52,000 babies in 2025, and when it came to naming them, many stuck with the classics.
Noah claimed the top spot for boys for the seventh consecutive year, while Olivia dominated the girls' list for an impressive 13th year in a row. Olivia's streak now stands as the longest-running top name in Alberta's history, surpassing Ethan's nine-year run from 2001 to 2009 and Liam's seven-year reign from 2010 to 2016.
Amelia, Emma, and Sophia tied for the top five girls' names, along with Charlotte and Violet. For boys, Theodore, Oliver, Henry, Jack, and Lucas rounded out the top five. Theodore made a notable jump from fourth to second place, marking its highest ranking ever, while Liam dropped from third to seventh.
Parents chose over 14,500 unique names in total, with some drawing inspiration from pop culture figures like Khaleesi, Zendaya, and Beckham. Others looked to Greek mythology with names like Artemis and Zephyr, while nature-inspired choices included Azalea, Magnolia, and Sparrow. Some parents nodded to Alberta's heritage with names like Jasper and Rose, the province's official floral emblem.
Dale Nally, minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction, said the province is proud to welcome the youngest members of Alberta's family and will continue working to make Alberta a place where they can succeed.
