Alberta Health Services (AHS) issued a public alert on Tuesday, after being notified of a confirmed case of measles in the Calgary zone. AHS warned that anyone in specified locations in Canmore, Banff, and Calgary between April 6-11 may have been exposed to the highly contagious virus.

The health ministry reminded Albertans that anyone born in or after 1970 and with fewer than two doses of measles-containing vaccine is at risk for developing measles. Symptoms include a fever of 38.3C or higher; a cough, runny nose and/or red eyes; and most notably, a blotchy rash beginning three-to-seven days after the fever begins.

The alert came just one day after Alberta found itself without a chief medical officer of health. Dr. Mark Joffe's contract with the province had previously been extended for two weeks, but ended on Monday, April 14. The Government of Alberta has not yet announced Joffe's interim or permanent replacement.
