Election results: What does this mean for Calgary?

It took until Tuesday afternoon, but we finally got the result for the Calgary Confederation riding. It was the only Calgary riding where a Liberal candidate won. Liberal Corey Hogan took the seat, ousting Conservative incumbent Jeremy Nixon. In the end, Hogan won by 1,248 votes, making it Calgary’s tightest race.

Over in Calgary McKnight there was a Liberal upset. The riding had the lowest voter turnout of any riding in the city according to Elections Canada data. The incumbent, Liberal George Chahal, lost the riding to Conservative Dalwinder Gill by 1,334 votes.

As this really turned out to be a two-party race across the country, the CBC reported that Calgary voters on both sides are disappointed with the results.

Premier Danielle Smith said yesterday that Albertans “are hurt and betrayed.” She went on to say that Prime Minister Mark Carney has given the impression that he’s “open to establishing economic corridors that include pipelines” and that she and Carney will have a “very interesting conversation over the next six months.”

This piece of post-election analysis from the CBC looks at whether Carney will deliver enough change to meet the expectations of what Albertans were hoping for.
