Calgary Citizen Newsletter Tuesday March 4

Good morning !
If you’re looking for something fun to do next week, check out the CORE Shopping Centre between March 10-14 and swing into action at its first-ever pop-up golf simulator all for a good cause. The Fairways to Wellness – The CORE Cup is a closest-to-the-pin challenge charity fundraiser in collaboration with True North Mobile Golf supporting DAY1DADS Impact Foundation. For a donation of $20, participants get three shots in a daily closest-to-the-pin challenge with a chance to win prizes while also supporting a local charity. Golfers can put their skills to use for a chance to win the grand prize: a PXG putter and a Maserati for a day. The event takes place daily from 11am to 1pm on Level 2, across from the Guest Services desk.

US President Donald Trump has officially followed through on his threats of tariffs on Canadian goods—and the fallout has already begun. As of midnight, 25% tariffs were applied to Canadian exports, including manufacturing and agriculture, with 10% levied to energy products.
As Global News reports, a University of Calgary economist warns that Alberta could take a big hit, not just from Trump’s tariffs, but from Canada’s retaliatory tariffs.
According to CTV News, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the tariffs “unjustified and harmful” and vowed that Canada would not back down.
The fallout has already begun, as detailed by Associated Press, as the stock markets crashed and China is retaliating. Here are some ways Canadians are coping.

It’s never a bad idea to support local businesses. // Krista Sylvester
The tariff trade war was set to begin at midnight and barring any last minute changes from President Donald Trump, it’s going to be a rocky road for consumers on both sides of the border. We decided to create a list of Canadian brands you can choose to support during this tumultuous time, though this is just a snapshot to get you started. And friendly reminder, Tim Hortons isn’t actually Canadian but the majority in Canada are Canadian-owned franchises.
