Albertans are mourning a 24-year-old Calgary firefighter who died while battling the Jasper wildfires
Alberta Wildfire posted its condolences on X (formerly known as Twitter): "Today we are mourning the loss of one of our own… This morning we stood heartbroken with our partners as a procession passed by."
A 24-year-old Calgary firefighter based out of the Rocky Mountain House Fire Base died over the weekend while fighting an active fire north of Jasper. In a statement out of the Jasper Wildfire Command Centre, officials say the incident highlights the dangerous nature of wildland firefighting. "Every single person responding to the Jasper Wildfire Complex is in mourning today for our friend and colleague. The wildland fire community is small and every loss deeply impacts us all.”
As CBC reports, Alberta Wildfire held a procession for the fallen firefighter Sunday morning, lining up on both sides of the highway just outside of Jasper as emergency vehicles drove by while bystanders paid their respects.
According to CityNews, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said she was “forever grateful for the courageous wildland firefighters who risk their lives every day to protect others.”
