QUICK POLL

One of the world's most famous dinosaurs is coming to Calgary this summer

Photo: TELUS Spark Science Centre

Sue, the most complete and best-preserved Tyrannosaurus rex ever discovered, is coming to TELUS Spark Science Centre this summer. The travelling exhibition, developed by the Field Museum in Chicago, runs from June 27 to November 29 and promises something well beyond a typical fossil display.

Visitors can stand beside an exact cast of Sue's skeleton — 40 feet long and 13 feet tall at the hip — while a digital environment brings the Cretaceous period to life around them. The exhibition engages all five senses, from the scent of ancient plants to the rumble of a T. rex growl, and includes a full-scale, fleshed-out model of a T. rex mid-hunt alongside an Edmontosaurus — offering a dramatic glimpse into predator-prey dynamics from 68 million years ago.

The exhibit has also been updated with the latest scientific discoveries, including the addition of gastralia — belly ribs — that offer new insights into Sue's size and strength. Ongoing research continues to shape what scientists know about the dinosaur, meaning the exhibition reflects the most current understanding of how Sue lived, moved, and hunted.

Sue originally made her home at the Field Museum in Chicago, but this summer she's making the journey to Calgary — and given that Alberta is already one of the richest dinosaur fossil regions in the world, it feels like a natural fit.

Echoes of the Land returns for National Indigenous History Month

A performance described as "a creative earthquake" is back in Calgary this June. Echoes of the Land, which originally premiered at the 2025 High Performance Rodeo, returns to the Big Secret Theatre at Werklund Centre from June 25 to 28 as part of National Indigenous History Month.

The show is unlike most performances you'll attend. Audiences lie down on the floor — blindfolded or with eyes closed — and are immersed in a layered soundscape of traditional drumming, spoken word, and live music. There are no seats, no stage to watch, just sound and vibration washing over you in a meditative, deeply reflective experience.

"They're going to lie down on the floor and be bathed in music, sound, and poetry," said Eric Rose, artistic director. "They'll feel the vibration, because sound isn't just about what you hear, it's how you feel it. At the heart of the piece is a focus on Indigenous people, stories, and presence on this land."

The performance brings together a creative team led by Cedric Lightning, alongside Alanna Bluebird, Kenna Burima, Kris Demeanor, Jennie Esdale, Eric Rose, and Skip Wolfleg. Audiences are asked to bring their own yoga mat and arrive at least 15 minutes early — there is no late entry. Optional blindfolds are provided.

Where to eat and drink

🍴 Chianti Café: A Calgary institution since 1983, Chianti serves fresh pasta, house-made sauces, and daily-baked bread across two locations in Willow Park and Crowfoot. The Crowfoot location has outdoor seating — a nice option as the weather warms up.

🍴 Bow Valley Ranche Restaurant: Set in Fish Creek Provincial Park, the Bow Valley Ranche is a fine-dining destination built around Rocky Mountain game meats, local produce, and a vegetable garden grown on site. The outdoor seating makes it one of the more scenic spots for a summer meal in the city.
