🗣️ Welcome to Blue Sky City

A happy ending, Blue Sky City, film fest

Good morning !

“Blue Sky City.” That’s the new city slogan Calgary Economic Development unveiled yesterday and is meant to identify Calgary as the country’s sunniest city. The slogan is set to replace “Be a Part of the Energy,” which was created almost 10 years ago. Officials say the new brand is also designed to reflect the city’s evolving future. What are your thoughts on the new slogan? Let us know in the poll below!

Cereal, cartoons, video games—oh, and movies—await you at the 21st Calgary Underground Film Festival

The Calgary Underground Film Festival runs until April 28 at the Globe Theatre.

The 21st annual Calgary Underground Film Festival is taking over the Globe Theatre starting today for 11 days of film and so much more. The programmers sift through hundreds of films to bring the right mix of features, docs, animated shorts, and shorts to audiences. Programmers spend hundreds of hours going through every genre from horror, sci-fi, fantasy, comedies, thrillers, and more to make sure there is diversity, says lead programmer Brendan Tilley.

“Close to a year of film watching goes into programming each edition of the Calgary Underground Film Festival,” Tilley explains, adding the team officially starts considering submissions in July.

What they look for? “We have a team of previewers supporting us in finding films that defy convention,” he says, adding they appreciate films that depart from the norm, especially as transgressive films are part of an underground festival identity. “What I think is sometimes overlooked is how we can also find what might on the surface appear to be a family drama, but which is told in a way that pushes the boundaries of convention. We pride ourselves on highlighting underseen gems of Canadian cinema.”

It’s not just the films CUFF is known for, the festival also hosts the popular 14th edition of the All-You-Can-Eat Cereal Cartoon Party.

“If wild, non-stop cartoon madness is not enough for people, we stuff people with as much sugary cereal as they can handle,” Tilley says. “In past years we have exceeded 100 varieties of cereal. This may have been too many options and admittedly spreading the quality a bit thin. We have settled on a "sweet spot" of around 80 carefully selected varieties collected via our travels. We will have around 75 kilograms of cereal to fuel the madness.”

Tickets are only $10/$8 for members remaining consistent since 2010, something that is important to organizers.

Remember Wally the dog? Pooch with a broken femur finally finds a home

The City of Calgary updated us on the pawsitively happy ending for Wally who had injured his leg previously. // City of Calgary

Wally went from injured stray to pampered days in his new home. In January, while on a ski vacation in Kimberley, semi-retired couple Pieter and Corné came across Wally, a stray dog in Calgary recovering from a broken femur.

“Seeing his story melted my heart. I knew then that he was ours from that instant,” she says. Having been at the Animal Services Centre since October while recovering from a major injury, Wally had been through a lot. During their first meeting, Wally was very shy and nervous, but Corné knew he was the dog for them; that’s why, on their third meeting, when Wally finally gave Pieter his paw, the three of them were bonded for good.

The couple wasn’t even looking for a dog at the time and yet it still only took the weekend to build a fence around their yard despite the fact it was winter. Fearful and shy, Wally had to be lifted into their vehicle when he first came home from the shelter because car rides were one of his many fears. But after a couple of weeks together, Wally started to get used to his new home and now he has a routine.

“When we wake up, the first thing we do is snuggle with Wally,” says Corné, who adds that they couldn’t be happier. “We’ve just gotten so much out of adopting Wally, it’s joyful and our lives have changed for the better,” Pieter adds.
