Good morning {{ first name}}!

On Tuesday, we asked how well you know your neighbours. Just under half said they know them well and look out for one another. The comments were full of warmth, from street parties and shared gardens to 55-plus communities with movie nights and potlucks.

Not everyone is so lucky: a few readers noted that newer builds and changing neighbourhoods have made it harder to connect, and one reader shared that language and cultural differences make it tough to bridge the gap. For me, it was a good reminder that community doesn't always come easily, but it's worth the effort.

TELUS Spark is getting a federal funding boost

Good news for anyone who's ever spent an afternoon losing track of time at TELUS Spark — the science centre is getting a significant injection of federal funding to keep its experiences fresh and accessible.

The federal government has announced $879,065 for TELUS Spark through the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund, building on a previous $500,000 investment from the Department of Canadian Heritage for the centre's ongoing redevelopment.

The new funding will go toward upgrading the digital immersion gallery with two additional high-resolution projectors, as well as maintaining the software that keeps Flint — the centre's robotic platform — up and running for live demonstrations of robotics, automation, and emerging technologies. Earlier funding covered updated audiovisual equipment and accessibility upgrades to make the space more inclusive for all visitors.

"This investment enables us to create dynamic, inclusive spaces where science comes to life," said CEO Guy Labine, "reflecting both global perspectives and Indigenous ways of knowing."

TELUS Spark has been a fixture of Calgary's science and learning community since 2011, drawing more than 400,000 visitors a year.

Alberta museums and historic sites are free for kids this summer

If you're looking for a reason to get out and explore Alberta's history this summer, here's a good one. Through the federal Canada Strong Pass program, children and teens aged 17 and under can get into all 15 provincial museums and historic sites for free from now until September 7. Young adults aged 18 to 24 get in at half price — and there's no limit on visits, so you can go back as many times as you like.

The pass covers a wide range of sites across the province, from the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller and Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump near Fort Macleod to Lougheed House right here in Calgary. The benefits are applied automatically — no pass to download or present at the door.

The program also extends to several national parks and historic sites in Alberta, including Banff, Jasper, Elk Island, and Waterton Lakes National Parks, as well as the Cave and Basin and Bar U Ranch National Historic Sites.

A full list of participating sites is at alberta.ca/historic-sites-museums.

Where to eat and drink

🍴 The Porch: A West Coast-inspired spot on the Red Mile, The Porch serves shareable dishes and a solid cocktail menu in a space that feels like a sun-soaked summer porch — whether it's a weekday lunch or a late-night out.

🍴 Kensington Pub: A neighbourhood institution since 1993, Kensington Pub is the kind of place where the staff knows your order by your second visit. Owned and operated by Lynn Porteous and her family, the menu leans into traditional English comfort food — think Cornish pasties, sausage rolls, and 14 beers on tap.
