Plus, Canada’s professional women’s soccer league kicks off

Good morning !
Last week, we asked if you were monitoring information about the measles outbreak in Alberta. Just over half of you said that you were doing your best to stay up to date. Here’s some of what we heard:
“I think more has to be done to get kids vaccinated so its not spread in schools, it should be mandatory before allowed to attend schools. ”
“I get updates from the WHO and news from UofCalgary.”
“I wear a mask when outside of my community.”
“It's shockingly sad I have to monitor! The outbreak tells me that too many people did not get vaccinated!”

Calgary Bike Swap wheels into town May 3

With spring in the air and more sunshine on the way, it’s time to break out the bikes. But if your old iron horse took a bit of a beating last season — or if it’s been sitting in the garage, coated in rust — you may want to stop by the Calgary Bike Swap on May 3.
The gathering is a non-profit bicycle buy/sell/donate event that is consistently held on the first Saturday in May. The Calgary Bike Swap is founded and funded by Chris and Laura Grant, two local seniors who, as they put it, feel that providing secure transport to Albertans is a good use of their life savings. The event’s consignment fee hasn’t been raised since 2015.
In the morning, all bikes brought in for sale go through a safety check and are run through proprietary software to verify that they haven’t been flagged as stolen. In the afternoon, the doors open to the public, and the hunt for a bike begins.
This year’s event takes place on May 3 at the City Centre Parkade at 340-10 Avenue SW.

Youth theatre explores self acceptance

For many students, starting the sixth grade is challenging. But for Alexa, the protagonist of Celexia, life becomes even more difficult when she’s diagnosed with dyslexia. What follows is a journey through frustration, discovery, and ultimately, self-acceptance.
The show is presented by the Citizen Theatre, a new theatre for young audiences aged eight or older. Celexia is a 40-minute play that aims to transform the challenge of a learning disability into an adventure about identity, imagination, and learning to love oneself.
“Growing up with a learning disorder isn’t easy, and there’s still so much stigma around neurodivergence,” said Alexa R. McGinn, playwright and artistic director of the Citizen Theatre. “I wanted to make something that would have helped me when I was growing up.”
Celexia is playing for one night only, on April 25 at the Festival Hall.
