No strike, but not overtime as Canada Post slows down

If your mail’s running late, you’re not alone. Canada Post workers across the country have stopped working overtime as part of escalating job action by their union, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW). It’s not a full-on strike, but with shifts capped at 40 hours a week, sorting and delivery delays are starting to pile up.

Canada Post says it’s still operating, but admits customers should expect slower service. Talks between the union and the company recently broke down after a meeting that reportedly lasted less than half an hour.

So, what’s the fight about? CUPW is pushing for better pay, job security, and more manageable workloads—issues it says have gone unresolved while parcel volumes and pressures have climbed.

Workers had walked off the job in late 2024, but were ordered back by the federal labour board, which temporarily extended their contract and handed out a 5% wage increase. That agreement just expired, and with negotiations going nowhere, the union is now flexing its muscles—without shutting things down entirely. At least, not yet.

In Calgary, some organizations are worried about the impact that the labour action could have on operations. Inn from the Cold, a family shelter, said that it “takes a village to support families through tough times,” and the slowdown in service could lead to a drop in fundraising during a critical time.

Need to know

🏥 Alberta Health Services has issued a standing measles exposure advisory as it continues to manage a significant number of cases of measles.

🏃‍♀️ A record 17,250 participants ran in the Calgary marathon over the weekend, making it the event’s largest ever turnout.

💔 Tragically, a woman in her 70s has passed away after being run over at a Wendy’s drive-through. She is believed to have tripped and fell into the path of the vehicle.

👀 Former Calgary city councillor Joe Magliocca has been ordered to serve a six-month conditional sentence in the community after being convicted of fraud. Here’s how Magliocca lost public trust.

🌳 Crescent Height’s Rotary Park is getting an update, including restoring its 110-year-old lion statue and installing a new hydration hub in the park’s off-leash area.

🤝 The region is getting ready for the G7 leaders' summit in Kananaskis next month. The Calgary Chamber of Commerce expects the event to bring in big bucks for the local economy.

🐻 Everyone’s chipping in when it comes to getting ready for the G7 summit — 200 local kids were out in full force last week picking buffaloberries in an effort to deter bears from the area.

Comedy legend Martin Short returns to Calgary

The Owen Hart Foundation is marking its 26th anniversary in style with an evening of laughs where iconic Canadian comedian and actor Martin Short will take the stage at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium on Saturday, November 15. The event celebrates more than two decades of the foundation’s work in Calgary and beyond, supporting individuals with “limited resources, but unlimited potential.” Tickets for the show are on sale now.

This isn’t Martin Short’s first time partnering with the Owen Hart Foundation, but the timing couldn’t be better. With a career that spans decades—from his early Emmy-winning days on SCTV and Saturday Night Live to his current starring role in the hit series Only Murders in the Building—Short brings a rare mix of nostalgia and staying power. The foundation's founder, Dr. Martha Hart, says they’re “exceptionally ecstatic” to host him again.

The Calgary-based Owen Hart Foundation has a long-standing tradition of hosting major performers while raising awareness and funds for its local and national programs. Past events have featured high-profile names, and this year's headliner promises another unforgettable night. With Short’s blend of quick wit, beloved characters, and undeniable stage presence, the evening is set to be a celebration not just of comedy—but of community impact.
