Calgary is marking a milestone in the growth of northwest Calgary, celebrating construction progress on the new Symons Valley Library in Sage Hill. The 15,000-square-foot library is part of Phase 2 of the broader Symons Valley Centre project, which also includes a multi-modal street, parking facilities, and an outdoor community commons where residents can gather and relax. Construction is expected to continue through 2028.

"Symons Valley Library is an investment in the people and communities of northwest Calgary," said Mayor Jeromy Farkas. "This project will bring together important amenities, including a new library, public gathering spaces, and future community services such as a Calgary Transit Terminal, helping create a vibrant destination where residents can connect, learn and thrive."

The library sits on a seven-acre site that's being developed in phases. Beyond the library itself, future plans call for adjoining land to be used for non-market housing, mixed-use development, and a Calgary Transit terminal, aimed at giving residents access to housing, transit, and community amenities all within walking distance of each other.

Sarah Meilleur, CEO of Calgary Public Library, said the new branch will expand the library's collections and early learning programming while serving as a gathering space for the surrounding communities. "A growing city needs more libraries, and the welcoming, accessible, community spaces they provide," she said. "This new library will expand our collections, increase access to early learning opportunities, and bring people together around new ideas and perspectives."

Once complete, the library will primarily serve residents of Sage Hill, Kincora, Sherwood, Nolan Hill, and Evanston — among the fastest-growing communities in the city.
