Calgary gears up for 45th annual Terry Fox Run

Calgarians will join communities across Canada on Sunday, September 14, for the 45th annual Terry Fox Run, marking nearly half a century since Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope. The Calgary event will take place at Fort Calgary, with registration beginning at 9:00 a.m. and the run starting at 10:00 a.m., featuring a scenic 3.5-kilometre loop along the river and through St. Patrick's Island.

Calgary's already off to a strong start with fundraising, having raised more than $203,000 toward their $545,000 goal. The route welcomes everyone—whether you're running, cycling, rollerblading, or using a wheelchair, and you can even bring your dog along on a leash. For those feeling adventurous, there's an optional "Mound Terry Fox" climb along the way. While parking at Fort Calgary is limited and costs a fee, downtown street parking is free on Sundays, and the site is easy to reach by bus or C-Train.

This special anniversary year has brought some exciting additions, including a limited-edition vinyl of "Courage (for Terry)" by The Tragically Hip. Donations made starting September 4 will go twice as far thanks to PharmaChoice Canada's matching program, doubling contributions up to $100,000. Since Terry's journey began, the foundation has raised more than $950 million, funding over 1,300 cancer research projects that continue to bring hope to families across Canada.

The Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards Foundation has named three distinguished artists as recipients of the province's top artistic recognition for 2025. Internationally renowned trumpeter Jens Lindemann, Calgary multimedia artist Rita McKeough, and Calgary choral conductor Elaine Quilichini will each receive $30,000 and be honoured at a ceremony at the Art Gallery of Alberta on October 4.

The awards mark the 20th anniversary of the Distinguished Artist Awards, which have recognized Alberta's creative talent since 2005. Lindemann, who splits his time between Edmonton and Los Angeles, is a Member of the Order of Canada and currently teaches at UCLA while serving as artistic director of international music festivals. Calgary's McKeough received the Governor General's Award in Visual and Media Arts in 2009 and is known for pushing boundaries in contemporary art through installations and kinetic sculptures.

Quilichini has spent three decades in Calgary building and directing the Calgary Girls Choir, taking young performers on international tours and winning competitions from Vienna to CBC Radio's National Choral competition. All three recipients will also enjoy a two-week residency at the Banff Centre's Leighton Artist Studios as part of their recognition for elevating Alberta's artistic profile both nationally and internationally.
