G7 Summit brings global focus — and local impacts — to Alberta

As the G7 Summit gets underway in Kananaskis, Calgarians are seeing the ripple effects of global diplomacy close to home.

Security has noticeably increased around the city and into the mountains, with local and federal agencies working in tandem to monitor both digital and physical threats. Temporary airspace restrictions are also in place, limiting civilian aircraft movement throughout the summit. On Sunday, North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) fighter jets took to the skies after a civilian aircraft violated the airspace restrictions.

Back in Calgary, groups have taken to the streets to make their voices heard. Protesters gathered downtown over the weekend, calling attention to issues ranging from global inequality to Indigenous rights. Meanwhile, a peaceful rally in support of Ukraine was held at Olympic Plaza, ahead of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's anticipated participation in the summit.

While most Calgarians won’t see the world leaders firsthand, the international spotlight—and influx of visitors—is being felt in everything from hotel bookings to traffic flow. The summit continues through the week, with major themes expected to include climate policy, global security, and economic recovery.
