A Calgary city committee has unanimously endorsed a request for the federal government to contribute more than $845 million toward six infrastructure priorities, with a full council vote expected before the submission heads to Ottawa in July.

The ask covers a range of projects: $190 million for the Bearspaw South feeder main replacement, $255 million for a new bus maintenance facility in Bonnybrook-Alyth-Manchester Industrial, $170 million for system stabilization of five recreation centres, $150 million for a long-sought multisport field house at Foothills Athletic Park, $80 million to extend the Blue Line LRT toward the Calgary International Airport, and funding for the Prairie Economic Gateway inland port on Calgary's southeast border.

Ward 4 Coun. DJ Kelly told the Calgary Herald the timing is right. "The federal government's been really clear that they're looking to invest in Canadian infrastructure in some major projects. Here in Calgary, we have some significant major infrastructure projects."

Ward 11 Coun. Rob Ward was more measured, telling CityNews: "Words are cheap, actions speak louder, so we'll see what they do."

The request comes as the city faces a nearly $50-billion infrastructure deficit, with 11 per cent of city-owned assets in either poor or very poor condition, according to a recent report to council.
