Calgary Citizen Thursday Newsletter June 6
Good morning !
With summer just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to remind you that the city’s eight outdoor pools are set to open on June 15. According to the Calgary Outdoor Swimming Pools Association website, those pools are the Bowview Outdoor Pool; Forest Lawn Outdoor Pool; Highwood Outdoor Pool; Millican Ogden Outdoor Pool; Mount Pleasant Outdoor Pool; Silver Springs Outdoor Pool; South Calgary Outdoor Pool; and Stanley Park Outdoor Pool. The city also has eight spray parks and four wading pools, which usually open around Father’s Day.

It took four years to build but the BMO Centre is set to bring $1 million in revenue to the city each year

The newly expanded BMO Centre is set to bring thousands of delegates and hundreds of thousands of dollars to the city now that it’s officially open for business. The $500 million BMO Centre is now the largest facility of its kind in Western Canada and boasts 1,000,000 square feet to host up to 33,000 people.
Calgary Chamber of Commerce president and CEO Deborah Yedlin says the expansion has already helped attract dozens of conferences, many of which would not have been possible without the expansion.
However, she says the city needs to add up to 3,000 hotel rooms to meet the expected demand.
“If this shortage is not addressed, we will not realize the full potential of what the BMO Centre expansion represents as it could result in more than 100,000 lost night stays by 2031,” she said in a statement.

At Inn from the Cold it takes a village to help single mothers get back on their feet
In Alberta, a single mother with one young child can receive roughly $1,850 in monthly income support. Yet, with the average rent for a bachelor apartment at $1,525, the remaining $325 scarcely covers basic necessities. // Shutterstock
It might sound shocking but there are over 60 families led by single mothers finding support at Inn from the Cold at the end of each day. The shelter provides housing and shelter for people facing homelessness, with more than half the clientele being single mothers and their children who need a safe space, emotional assistance, and resources to find secure housing.
Former client Imelda was only given two weeks to vacate her family’s apartment. “I felt like I failed as a mom. My husband had left me and our three kids like we were nobody – I had to survive alone,” she says. “That was the lowest time of my life, but that’s when I found Inn from the Cold. They saved us. They provided everything we needed; help with housing was the biggest part of it. Now I feel happier and more confident. I would say our life is amazing.” You can watch her story on YouTube here.
They can’t do what they do alone and they are asking Calgarians to consider making a donation in the name of an important mother-figure in their life during the A Village Can Campaign until June 9.
“That one simple act can go a long way to helping a mom get back on her feet and give her children the life they deserve.” During the campaign, donations are matched dollar for dollar by a group of generous Calgarians, doubling the impact of every gift. To show how far your dollars go; $250 provides 10 families with daily bus passes, $400 provides diapers and wipes for 10 babies, and $1,050 provides a week of shelter stay for a family in need.
