The Better Business Bureau is ringing the car alarm over stolen used cars

The BBB estimates that this issue could cost Canadians up to a billion dollars annually, with Alberta being a key area of concern. Consumers are encouraged to remain vigilant to avoid falling victim to this troubling trend. // Shutterstock

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is raising the car alarm about the growing risk of purchasing stolen used vehicles in Canada. BBB officials say recent reports suggest that as many as one in three used cars sold in the country may be illicitly obtained. Mary O’Sullivan-Andersen, the president and CEO of BBB Alberta and East Kootenay, is warning consumers about the dangers associated with buying stolen used vehicles.

“Often, these cars have been ‘washed’—a process where the vehicle identification number (VIN) is concealed with a similar number to hide the vehicle’s true history,” she explains, adding this practice, known as re-vinning, leaves unsuspecting buyers at risk.

As buying a used car represents a significant investment for many, the BBB urges consumers to take necessary precautions. “It’s crucial to purchase from reputable outlets, carefully inspect the VIN, and obtain a vehicle history report from respected services like CARFAX,” O’Sullivan-Andersen added.
