Calgary police issue a warning after Calgarians made more than 150 complaints about personal fireworks

In North America, fireworks account for over 19,000 fires and send more than 9,000 people to emergency rooms each year, according to police.

The Calgary police had to issue a warning on Saturday after receiving more than 150 complaints reminding residents about the rules regarding personal fireworks. “Fireworks and pyrotechnics are strictly prohibited within city limits unless handled by trained and certified professionals with a valid fireworks permit,” police said in the statement. Officials believe many of the reported incidents were connected to the Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas celebrations.

According to Global News, residents in the northeast neighbourhood of Martindale are asking why officials ignored the complaints of fireworks being set off with little to no regard for safety. “I had sparks falling on my trees, falling on my house,” one resident told Global.

The Calgary Herald reported that Calgary airport officials considered runway shutdown amid the flurry of fireworks complaints.

As CTV reports, many people the police spoke to about their fireworks didn’t know they were violating a bylaw. Using fireworks without a permit not only violates bylaws, but also the National Fire Code, which can result in charges or fines.
