Good morning, there!

In 2013 after the Calgary floods, the outpouring of generosity from neighbours sparked the idea to create Neighbour Day, which is a way to celebrate the kindness of your neighbours. This year’s Neighbour Day falls on June 17 and Rümi and ATCOenergy are hosting a Neighbour Day Celebration from noon to 5pm. The event will feature live music, magicians, face painting, a petting zoo, and more. There is also a contest open to all Albertans where Rümi and ATCOenergy will be rewarding one community the Ultimate Block Party. All you have to do is nominate your community by June 11 and explain what makes it great and why it deserves to win. Good luck!

COMMUNITY

Alzheimer Calgary is working to show the community that those living with dementia can still enjoy the same activities they had prior. // Submitted

“Aging is more” is the theme of this year’s Seniors’ Week across Alberta from June 5 to 11, which reminds people that misconceptions about aging and age-related diseases still exist. Dementia is often associated with memory loss, but it’s much more than that. Dementia includes challenges with thinking and decision-making, communication difficulties, and changes in mood or behaviour. These are daily challenges for those living with dementia, but it should not limit their quality of life.

Calgary seniors: Age is one of the biggest risk factors for developing dementia, which is important to Calgary’s fastest-growing age group—seniors.

Misconceptions: Most portrayals of dementia in movies and TV focus on the late stages of the disease, however you can live with dementia for many years, enjoying the things you love before ever hitting those late stages.
