Plus, polar bear update, folk fest acts, and scorching heat
Good morning !
I finally made it to mid-west America for a little working vacation and besides the strange political chaos (if you know, you know!) it’s actually quite peaceful out here. And more importantly, there’s air conditioning, and that’s all I needed with this kind of heat. Have a good week!

Scotia Place: Your first look at Calgary’s proposed arena and event centre

Designs for the city’s new arena and events centre called Scotia Place were unveiled and the design was influenced by land, fire, and ice. "Our new event centre pays tribute to Indigenous peoples, establishing a link between Indigenous histories and ways of knowing, and a new gathering space that will honour those traditions,” Mayor Jyoti Gondek said of the new $1.2 billion event centre.
Besides being the new home of the Calgary Flames, it will also include a community rink, outdoor and indoor plazas, four restaurants, and more.
The city shared this video presentation for what they are calling the “new heart of entertainment.” We would love to hear what you think in our poll above and by email [email protected]. Check out the city’s video below.

Calgary Folk Music Fest is loaded with talent and here are a few lesser known acts we can’t wait for
The Mariachi Ghost dress in colourful embroidered mariachi suits, with half their faces painted as traditional Mexican Day of the Dead skeletons.
Celebrating its 44th anniversary, this year's Calgary Folk Music Festival features heavy-hitting musical acts such as the Cowboy Junkies, KT Tunstall, and The Roots. But did you know the festival has seven stages and hosts over 70 artists? In honour of the troubadour spirit, here are our daily picks for lesser-known, off-the-main-stage talent.
Thursday: The Mariachi Ghost - National Stage 4, 9:25-10:30pm
Begun as an art project among friends in 2009, evolving ensemble The Mariachi Ghost weaves fusion elements, prog rock and operatic four-part harmonies inspired by Mennonite choirs and foundational old Mexico sounds.
Friday: Meredith Moon - Horizon Heating Stage 1, 10:30-11:40am
Meredith Moon’s father may be legendary Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot but Moon has earned a stellar reputation for her unique non-traditional folk-punk-inspired approach to traditional music, as well as for her flair as a singer-songwriter.
Saturday: Mama’s Broke - Altitude Communications Stage 2, 4:20-5:30pm
Mama’s Broke is a duo of eastern Canadian multi-instrumentalists, Lisa Maria performing fiddle, mandolin, banjo and guitar and Amy Lou Keeler on guitar, banjo and fiddlesticks, with nearly every song featuring the two voices harmonized.
Sunday: Wyatt C. Louis - Horizon Heating Stage 1, 12:55-2pm
Nêhiyaw singer-songwriter Wyatt C. Louis offers music that at first seems easy on the ears, casual and comfortable. All good things, to be sure, but with more careful listening, he reveals a depth and craft in his songs.
