Plus: Catch up on the first week of 2024

Good morning, there!

Happy New Year! I am not excited about the cold wintery weather but we have been spoiled up until now. I tried to have a relaxing break and I sure got it—because I was sick for a week in bed! While it wasn’t the break I wanted, I was at least able to catch up on sleep. Now I just have to try to get into the swing of 2024.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT

Our year-end interview with Mayor Jyoti Gondek

Mayor Jyoti Gondek

We had a chance to chat with our mayor in December to ask her what strengths and challenges the city and Calgarians can expect to face in 2024 and this is what she had to say.

What are some of the challenges the city faced in 2023 that we should tackle heading into the new year?

One of the things that we're seeing is that there are so many Calgarians who are in positions of vulnerability right now. There are so many challenges around food security, around housing, and people are feeling that times are tough right now. I want to thank Calgarians for having such a giving spirit and for helping out in any way that they can.

What are some exciting things on the horizon that Calgarians can look forward to?

Well, there's some pretty incredible work that's going on in the city right now; our parks district, downtown with the revitalization of Arts Commons, the Olympic Plaza right across from it, and the facade is going up on the Glenbow. These are amazing places in our city that celebrate arts and culture, the culture and entertainment district over in East Village and the rivers district area and that's going to be a beautiful place for people to come together. There are a lot of projects that are going to create a strong public realm in our city. We continue to see a lot of investment into our downtown conversion program and I'm very excited about people being able to move into those homes that have been built. Really, just seeing the investment coming to life and people being able to enjoy those things.

Are there any New Year’s resolutions?

Everyone breaks New Year’s resolutions as soon as they make them. I would say trying to make sure that we are making decisions that are in the best interest of Calgarians and that we're out there listening to folks and providing the best possible services that we can.

Is there a message you want to leave our readers with?

It’s been a rough few years. We are trying to come out of an economic recession right now and we're still struggling with inflation. We are coming out of a pandemic and still seeing many respiratory illnesses out there. I would say to everyone, focus on the future that I know we can build together where we are stronger. And we are resilient, we will be okay. But we can only do that if we're working together. And we're focusing on each other's strengths and building that sense of community.
