Prioritizing Career Health: Tips on how to do a check up on your career and why it’s important
Canada Career Counselling began in 2009 (as Calgary Career Counselling) and has since grown and expanded into Toronto.
Health and fitness resolutions are often top of mind, but organizational psychologist Dr. Laura Hambley says it’s becoming more important than ever to check in on career health. The Calgary psychologist launched Canada Career Counselling in 2009 as a way to help people find fulfillment in their careers. A recent McKinsey report revealed that the top reasons employees give for taking a new job is compensation at 46%, meaningful work at 35%, and workplace flexibility at 34%. These findings illustrate the growing need for a harmony between career success and personal fulfillment, according to Hambley who shared with us some tips on how to do a career health check.
What is the importance of career health?
Career health is your overall satisfaction, engagement, and fulfillment with your current career. It is positively impacted by the alignment between the work that you do and your values, interests, talents, and personality. Given how much of our waking lives are spent working, feeling engaged and productive in our work translates into our overall wellbeing. Career health is an important indicator of wellness, and should be “checked up on” periodically so we can decide when we might need to pivot jobs, industries or careers, or develop ourselves further.
Let’s talk about the bigger picture impacts of this?
Our fulfillment or dissatisfaction in our careers impacts our overall wellbeing, and is tied to stress and burnout. A person’s career is a key component of their overall well-being and needs regular review and evaluation, much like their physical health.
What are some tips or suggestions you have for people in this area?
Taken from my LinkedIn article, to effectively conduct a career health check, ask yourself these critical questions to evaluate job satisfaction: Do I look forward to Monday mornings, or do I dread them? Do I think about work outside work hours? Is my contribution valued and supported by my boss? Is my workplace culture healthy and supportive? Would I recommend my job to a friend? Does work stress affect my sleep? Have I considered a different career path? Your answers to these questions will help inform whether you may need to shift an aspect of your career or perhaps leave altogether.
