From a chance encounter to podcast partners, how Wish We Never Met came to fruition

Dan Clapson and Amy Hef know how to ham it up on their podcast. The show's upcoming guests include Joel Plaskett, Simone Denny, and Madeline Merlo.

When Amy Hef and Dan Clapson first met, Hef wasn’t even sure she overly enjoyed Clapson’s personality, but he wore her down, he jokes! Fast forward years later and the Calgary duo are not only close friends but they have also recently launched a podcast together. Hef, a singer-songwriter and Clapson, a cookbook author and founder of the Blue Jay Sessions, have developed quite a banter with each other since their friendship started flourishing in 2019.

That’s when Clapson was venturing into the world of live music programming with Blue Jay Sessions and Hef became an integral part of the “Blue Jay Fam,” marking the beginning of a deep and multifaceted connection. They’ve travelled together, partnered up on numerous cultural events, and enjoyed countless drinks, developing a “sparring, comedic rapport” as they are known for.

The first season of their comedic pop culture podcast—Wish We Never Met—launched in June with new weekly episodes every Thursday. The podcast features conversations surrounding timely pop culture topics as well as interviews with a wide range of guests from the worlds of music, television and film. The podcast’s overarching theme of “wish we never met” explores various topics, from regrettable foods to questionable travel destinations.

"Dan and I can be known for having a lovingly brash public rapport with one another and I think that really translates well into a fun podcast," Hef says. The idea for their podcast was born out of casual conversations last fall. “We wanted the podcast to be a mix of our life experiences and interviews with different people.”

The podcast explores the theme of encounters that have left an impression, whether positive or negative. Their conversations dive into the people they’re glad they met and those they wish they hadn’t. “I have always said that people are generally much better the less you know them. The idea of ‘don’t meet your idols’ applies here,” Clapson says. “Sometimes a person is better as a peripheral friend rather than part of your inner circle.”

The reception to their podcast has been promising. Listeners have praised their chemistry and humour, which is a testament to their genuine connection. “When people tell us we’re funny together, it makes us wonder if we really are. But the back-and-forth between us is what makes it interesting, and we think we have something unique to offer,” Hef says.
