RCMP say the victim was a Good Samaritan trying to help

Good morning

I’ve been working from my “American home away from home” (aka my pretty cute makeshift office) for the past month and I’m finally about to make my journey back home. I can’t help but wonder if my dogs really miss me, did I make my bed before I left, and will Westjet really get me home without a cancellation—or more lost luggage? By the next time I land in your inbox, I should be working from the confines of my uncomfortable Calgary workspace (note to self, it needs work). Fingers crossed my travel goes smoother on the way home than it did on the way here!

"Exhaustive measures are in place to try and find you”: RCMP issue plea to remaining murder suspect to turn himself in

Police say suspect Elijah Blake Strawberry is armed and dangerous and members of the public should call 911 and not approach.

A week later, RCMP have released more details in what sparked a provincial manhunt for two murder suspects in what officials now say was a case of a Good Samaritan being killed while stopping to try and help the two suspects.

As CBC reports, police arrested Arthur Wayne Penner, 35, in Edmonton on Sunday and have since charged him with second-degree murder. Second-degree murder warrants were also issued for Elijah Blake Strawberry, 28, who was identified as a person of interest last week when officials released images from a Cochrane doorbell camera.

According to CTV, the man shot and killed is believed to be an employee of Rocky View County. A statement posted to the Rocky View County website on Tuesday expressed "sadness and shock" over the death of employee Colin Hough, saying he died "following an incident" that occurred earlier in the day.

The popular Great Outdoors Comedy Festival is just around the corner and you’re not going to believe the Calgary line-up with Russell Peters, Tom Segura, and Iliza Shlesinger headlining the three nights with a double header on Saturday. Beyond the headliners, there’s no shortage of laughs coming your way with Hannah Berner, Steven Ho, Zarna Garg, Trent McClellan, Jessica Kirson, Malik Elassal, Karla Marx, and more on tap. We spoke with organizer Chris Schoengut about what to expect this year when the festival gates open Aug. 23-25. Get your tickets here.

I know this event loves giving back to each community each year—what's the community impact this year for Calgary? With the newly launched Great Outdoors Community Fund, we've committed to donating $250,000 to local charities and not-for-profits this summer falling in three main pillars of support: arts and culture, sustainability and mental health. Specifically here in Calgary we're proud to be working with Easter Seals Alberta, who provides services that foster inclusion, independence and recreation for individuals with disabilities and medical conditions.

How has the festival grown since its inception? The growth has been crazy! GOCF started in 2021 only in Edmonton, to now being in seven cities coast-to-coast across Canada and our first one in the States (Spokane). Extremely proud of the team for their hard work and dedication to it, and I'm grateful to be a small part of it.

We know you love to be green. Let's talk about the nature-first initiatives that are important to organizers. Over the past couple of years we've really taken a step back and acknowledged the impact that large scale festivals can have on the planet. We're proud to say that all eight festival sites have a Climate Friendly Event Designation this year! A lot of little things add up to getting there, but we're just doing our part to keep the great outdoors...great!
