The city is and has been dangerously close to running out of water as water usage continues to exceed daily limits while repair work is done. Stories like these—Every flush counts: Mayor urges people to cut water use and Calgary water use drops from 'red' to 'yellow zone'—over the weekend highlight the need for Calgarians to cut back even further.
We had an email from a reader that said they would’t have known about the critical water shortage if they didn’t read it in our newsletter, so that prompted today’s poll question down below. Let us know what you think about this situation by emailing us at [email protected].

A massive memorial of flowers, jerseys, purple Gatorade, and Skittles formed on the steps of the Saddledome. Thousands of fans showed up to a candlelight vigil last week. // Flames Instagram
The funeral for former Flames member Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew was held on Monday in Pennsylvania. Johnny’s widow spoke at the memorial a week-and-a-half after the brothers were tragically killed while riding their bikes.
As CTV reports, Meredith Gaudreau gave a sincere thank you to Calgary for the outpouring of support for her and the Gaudreau family. She spoke at a memorial service for Johnny and his brother Matthew on Monday, calling Calgary their “home away from home,” after Johnny spent more than 10 years as a member of the Flames organization.
As CBC reports, Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau were remembered as loving brothers and husbands who put family above hockey and everything else at the tearful funeral.

Southcentre Mall art journal campaign reminds Calgarians about the importance of little moments and a big impact through mentorship
Southcentre Calgary and Big Brothers Big Sisters Calgary have teamed up to remind Calgarians about the power of mentorship and the impact it can have on the social-emotional skills, self-esteem, and mental well being of youth. With 150 local youth currently waiting for someone to step up, the campaign combines art and advocacy, featuring a one-of-a-kind journal designed by Chloe W., a young BBBS mentee and budding artist. Journals will be sold at the mall for $10 until Sept. 15 in hopes of reminding people about the urgent need for volunteers.
The installation itself features a mural of the featured journal artwork and a mirrored wall inviting Calgarians to picture themselves as mentors. We spoke with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Calgary president and CEO Ken Lima-Coelho about this program.
Tell us about the importance of mentors and the current need BBBS is seeing.
We are strengthening community bonds through mentorship. We build developmental relationships between mentors and mentees supported by brain research. It’s how we believe we can transform our communities into networks of support for young people. A mentoring relationship between a mentor and a mentee is what we call a match. Mentors help children and youth in one of two settings: in schools and in the community. Last year, we supported 1,039 total matches with 1,436 youth served.
What are the benefits of mentorship to those being mentored?
For many, a mentor means having someone who believes in them to navigate the challenges of growing up. This support builds confidence and fosters a sense of belonging, helping children develop the social and emotional skills to thrive. Research shows that young people who have mentors through programs like BBBS Calgary experience numerous benefits. They are more likely to succeed in school, build strong relationships with peers, and exhibit greater resilience when facing challenges. Mentors provide that stable and caring presence, essential for the well-being of children and youth.
What are the benefits of mentorship to those doing the mentoring?
Mentoring is not about being perfect. You don’t need to be a superhero or have all the answers. What truly matters is your willingness to listen, practice kindness, and to offer a supportive presence. Anyone can be a mentor, regardless of their background or life experiences. If you have the desire to make a big difference in a young person's life, you have what it takes. Mentorship can be effortless yet impactful, requiring as little as one hour per week. Spending time with your mentee can be as easy as exploring a hobby, going for a walk, or chatting about their day. These small moments add up, creating a lasting impact while expanding possibilities for mentors and mentees to dream big and think beyond their immediate surroundings.
