‘Multibillion-dollar boondoggle’: City officials say city can no longer afford Green Line LRT project

The province has pulled more than a billion dollars in funding for Calgary’s long awaited Green Line LRT, which the mayor says the city now can’t afford. // Shutterstock

Bad news for Calgarians after Mayor Jyoti Gondek told reporters that the city's Green Line LRT project is on hold for the foreseeable future in response to a letter from the province stating the province won’t commit to its portion of the funding.

As CBC reports, Devin Dreeshen, Alberta's minister of transportation and economic corridors, stated in the letter to the city that the recently revised Green Line LRT plan is "unacceptable" and is "fast becoming a multibillion-dollar boondoggle."

As CTV reports, Gondek said on Wednesday that, “We can no longer be the order of government that is holding the debt financing and all of the financial risk on this project.”

Calgary Farmers’ Market has two locations in the city. // Instagram

Calgary has some great farmers' markets where you can find fresh produce, artisanal goods, and so much more. Here are a few of our favourites.

Calgary Farmers' Market:  Located at 510 77 Ave. SE and the more recently-opened northwest this is one of the city's largest and most popular markets. It features a wide range of vendors selling everything from fresh produce and meats to baked goods and crafts.

Crossroads Market: Found at 1235 26 Ave. SE, this market is known for its variety and the blend of both permanent and seasonal vendors. It’s a fantastic place to pick up fresh produce, local meats, and handmade crafts.

Airdrie Farmers Market: This market takes place at Jensen Park, the Plainsmen Arena, located 320 Centre Ave. E until Oct. 12 on Wednesdays and it’s a cute market worth checking out.
