It’s officially the second costliest disaster in Canada history to the tune of $2.8 billion, second only to the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfires. The city was flooded with massive hail, strong winds, heavy rain, and flash flooding on Aug. 5, which damaged the airport and one in five homes in the city.
According to Global news, Alberta has experienced five of the 10 costliest disasters in Canadian history, all of which have occurred since 2016.
CTV is reporting that IBC said that between 2001 and 2010, Canadian insurers averaged $701 million a year in losses related to severe weather.

A look at five Calgary International Film Festival (CIFF) movies we can’t wait to check out
‘My Old Ass’ is a fresh coming-of-age film starring Aubrey Plaza. // CIFF
The 25th annual Calgary International Film Festival is just around the corner and we couldn’t be more excited for this year’s slate of movies. Besides the big ones (Tragically Hip, opening night), we wanted to hare with you a few of the other films we have circled on our calendar over the 10-day event from Sept. 19-29.
Hangdog: A movie about a man on a mission to find his stolen dog just speaks to my heart as someone who has several dogs, but it’s even better that it’s comedic and heartwarming.
My Dead Friend Zoe: From executive producer Travis Kelce, this 2024 SXSW Audience Award winner is a buddy film about a complicated friendship with… a dead girl. We can’t wait to watch this film about the complex ways we process grief.
Grand Theft Hamlet: This just looks fun! This movie is about a pair of friends who are playing the video game Grand Theft Auto when they stumble across a theatre and attempt to stage a production of Hamlet, within the game.
Get Away: We are suckers for a good thriller so this one about a family vacation to a remote getaway takes an unexpected turn when they discover the island they're on is inhabited by a serial killer has got our attention.
My Old Ass: We love Aubrey Plaza but we also think this coming-of-age story is a refreshing take on the genre when an 18th birthday mushroom trip brings Elliott face-to-face with her wisecracking 39-year-old self.
Where to eat and drink
🍴 Class Clown Burgers: Nostalgic and cool, we can’t get enough of this Mission hamburger spot with a wide selection of food and drink menu options. You need to try one of everything!
🍴 Parlour Ice Cream: From year-round staples like Salted Caramel and London Fog to seasonal selections like Blueberry Cheesecake and vegan options, there's something for everyone here.
