Calgary Citizen Newsletter Thursday Oct. 17

Good morning !

The way we learned that there might be snow in the forecast is because city officials released their winter road maintenance policy Wednesday in advance of the change of season. It’s safe to say we aren’t looking forward to snow and while we aren’t ready for it, apparently city officials are. There’s also some changes to the city’s snow removal bylaw, including new fines for people who shovel snow from their private property into public spaces such as roads, bike lanes, and sidewalks. Residents can also face fines if they fail to remove snow from public sidewalks, adjacent to their property, within 24 hours of the snowfall ending. Fines range from $150 for a first offence to $750 for a third offence and repeat offenders may also face a court appearance. The full policy can be found here. Answer our poll below and email us at [email protected] to let us know what you think about these changes.

Mr. Worldwide needs to find a home as the Calgary Humane Society’s longest canine resident

Are you Mr. Worldwide’s new home?

It’s been 175 days—plus another—since a two-year-old American pit bull mix has called the Calgary Humane Society (CHS) home and yet somehow, Mr. Worldwide still needs to find a fur-ever home. Shelter officials say their longest-staying canine resident is an “incredible dog with so much personality.”

“He’s full of energy, loves to play, and is a champion at cuddling,” says Stavy Giannoulis of the CHS. “We’re all surprised he hasn’t found his forever home yet. He loves people and deserves a family who can give him the love and attention he craves.” Mr. Worldwide is available at a discounted fee, so check out this volunteer favourite.

Because Calgary Animal Services is over capacity at the shelter, they are hosting an adopt-a-thon in hopes that Calgarians will consider bringing a new pet into their families and homes. Adoption fees will be lower from Oct. 17-19, so cats will be available for $50 and dogs will be available for $75. The lower fees are designed to encourage more adoptions. and includes the first set of vaccinations, spaying or neutering, microchipping for identification and a 12-month pet licence.
