Calgary Zoo’s two-year-old gorilla Eyare dies unexpectedly
Two-year-old gorilla Eyare died on Tuesday. // Calgary Zoo
A two-year-old Western lowland gorilla at the Calgary Zoo/Wilder Institute died unexpectedly. Zoo officials announced the death of Eyare through a news release and said the young gorilla was injured on Tuesday while moving between back of house spaces. Officials say that despite the vet team’s efforts to save her, she died as a result of her injuries.
While the zoo says it is investigating the incident and reviewing protocols, they didn’t release more details on what exactly caused the injuries. Zoo officials will conduct a necropsy. The zoo said it is monitoring the other gorillas while they grieve the loss of Eyare, who was born in 2022 at the Calgary Zoo.
“Her passing will leave an immense hole in the hearts of our organization and our community,” says Colleen Baird, the zoo’s director of animal care, health, and welfare. “Eyare will be remembered for her playful, curious spirit. Her short, but impactful life brought unending joy to our lives, she will be deeply missed by all.”
This is the third animal death announced since last week with an 18-year-old female Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep euthanized last month due to "age-related degenerative changes" that were affecting her quality of life, and a wild boar was also euthanized due to degenerative changes.
