TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, there!

With only a few days left of Stampede, we’ve rounded up a few events to enjoy on or off the grounds! Today, Calgary Roller Skate is taking over Olympic Plaza with a pop-up Stampede Skate. The rink is free to use and rentals are only $10. If you’re hoping to catch some live music, the Blue Willow Stampede Showcase at Elite Brewing and Cidery will have many live performances on Friday with tickets for $20. On Saturday, join King Eddy for Acoustic Afternoons with Liz Christensen, an Alberta-based pop/country artist. There is no cover for the event and all ages are welcome. Lastly, close out Stampede with the second annual Drag Brunch at Nashville North. Hosted by local queen Karla Marx, the brunch will include admission to Stampede Park, a gourmet brunch buffet, a two-hour drag show, and the Best Caesar in Town competition. Yahoo!

The Alberta Elite Women’s Wrestling Club at the recent nationals in Vancouver. // Submitted

Since 1994, wrestling coach Michael Dunn has run the Roc Wrestling Club, which is hailed as one of the best youth wrestling programs in the country. Recently, the Roc Wrestling Club split into two different clubs: the Alberta Elite Women’s Wrestling Club as a girls-only team and the Roc as a boys-only team. Generally, clubs around Canada combine girls and boys, but Dunn and his team wanted to try a new tactic to get more girls into wrestling.

Encouraging girls to participate: Boys versus girls in wrestling equate to “about one third to about two thirds or 30 to 70” in Alberta according to Dunn.

High standards for high rewards: The coaches train the kids three to five times a week in order to equip them with the skills and the drive to become student athletes at the university level.
