Calgary police speak out about the concerning rising number of fatal collisions in the city

Last year, a total of 85 traffic investigations related to serious-injury or fatal collisions, which ties with the year 2007 as the highest yearly count on record. // Calgary Police Service
Calgary police are worried about the concerning rising number of serious-injury and fatal collisions. After responding to 29 fatal collisions last year, the highest number of fatal collisions the city has seen since 2013, police officials are expressing concern regarding road safety and road-user behaviour. Of those 29 fatal collisions, 13 involved pedestrians. So far this year, there have been three fatal collisions, two of them involving pedestrians, an alarming trend that officials don’t want to continue.
Insp. Paul Wozney of the Traffic Section says it is difficult to attribute a single cause to these incidents, however, it’s been a combination of pedestrians crossing streets without the right of way, and some motorists proceeding when it is not always safe to do so. Officials say it’s concerning that there have also been incidents where pedestrians are even being struck while crossing in crosswalks.
“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility,” Wozney says. “Motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, and everyone else who travels on Calgary roads must keep safety at the forefront of their minds all of the time. We know that as police, we have a role to play too when it comes to enforcing laws around road use… We all have a right to make it home safe every single day.”
By the numbers:
The majority of fatal collisions occurred in the final quarter of 2024.
Of last year’s 29 fatal collisions, 18 involved a vulnerable road user (pedestrian or motorcyclist)
Last year, 35% of fatal collisions involved unsafe or excessive speed.
Police remind Calgarian pedestrians to use designated crosswalks, look both ways before walking, obey signals, and avoid jaywalking, to name a few tips. Motorists should ensure visibility, adhere to speed limits, and avoid distracted behaviour.

YYC Hot Chocolate Fest runs at multiple locations Feb. 1-28, so hop in to Hexagon Cafe to check out this Mississippi Mud Mug delight.
My sister and I make it an annual tradition to take part in the YYC Hot Chocolate Festival every February, so I thought I would share some of the spots we are excited to check out over the next four weeks. Every February, participating cafés, restaurants, and chocolatiers compete for the coveted titles of YYC’s best hot chocolate, best spirited hot chocolate, most creative hot chocolate, and special cup that runneth over award.
Calgarians have the whole month to rate their hot chocolate choices to help decide who will be crowned YYC’s best hot chocolate. $1-$3 from every cup sold supports Meals on Wheels. With a record-breaking 98 unique drinks, last year’s competition was fierce. Little Chief had the top rated hot chocolate, Hexagon Café had the best selling hot chocolate, Tops Pizza South had the top-rated spirited hot chocolate, and Telus Spark had the most creative hot chocolate. Our picks for this year are below and check out the slate of options here.
Abbey’s Creations Cocoa d'Amour: This rich, thick, and creamy cocoa is reminiscent of the finest French hot chocolate, delivering a velvety smoothness that melts in your mouth.
Choklat’s Chapter Two: It's double chocolatey. It's double rich. It's topped with chocolate mousse and gold adorned caramel flakes—and 38 grams of protein.
Hexagon Cafe’s Mississippi Mud Mug: A rich, butterscotch-infused chocolate sauce that’ll make your taste buds do a happy dance. Mixed up with steamed milk, rimmed with chocolate pudding, topped with a generous swirl of cocoa caramel whipped cream, and a pecan brownie on top with a drizzle of caramel.
Analog Cafe’s The Black Forest: A luxurious chocolate and cherry combination topped with a beautiful coconut whipped cream, dusting of cocoa, and a premium Amarena cherry.
Higher Ground’s Nanaimo Bar Hot Chocolate: Inspired by its in-house Nanaimo bars, this hot chocolate comes to life with sweet coconutty goodness, custard whipped cream, steamed chocolate milk, dark chocolate drizzle, and bits of Nanaimo bar chunks on top.
Where to eat and drink
