Calgary Citizen Newsletter Thursday Feb. 27

Good morning !
We asked and you delivered! We wanted to craft a story with our readers’ thoughts and feelings on what they love about our great country and why they do or don’t want to become a 51st state. Dozens of people responded, and almost every single email except for a couple, wants Canada to stay Canada—and has some strong words for Trump. We are excited to share your responses on what we all love so much about being Canadian. We had about three emails of people who were upset we even asked the question, but we didn’t mean to offend anyone—we just wanted to celebrate our wonderful country and that’s what our readers have done. See below for the results and thank you for your feedback!

Thank you everyone who replied with their thoughts about President Donald Trump talking about Canada becoming the 51st state. We didn’t have room to share everything but we have highlighted some replies below.
M says they were six years old, living in the Netherlands when the Canadian Army liberated their country. “They came from the promised land, and I was going there as soon as I grew up.” In 1958, when they turned turned 19, they emigrated to Calgary. “Now, I'm 85 years old and a proud Canadian.”
J.M. says as a proud Canadian, they cannot support the notion of Canada becoming part of the United States. “As someone who has always appreciated the unique character of our country, I can say that America holds no allure for me… Canada is stronger than that—we are a country that values all voices and believes in progress.”
S.B. says as a born and raised Canadian, they abhor the thought of being controlled by the USA in any way. “We are different than them in a whole lot of ways… Never to become their 51st state.”
J.H. says Canada benefits from healthy happy thriving families, friends, and neighbours and that it may not be perfect, but they “love Canada and the governing system, our geography, and the inclusiveness of all types of people, and I treasure our Indigenous peoples.”
M.K. says they have no desire to become an American despite having the chance when they immigrated years ago. “Canada, in particular Calgary, welcomed us as immigrants. Our potential as new Canadians was recognized.”
S.J. says they are proud of their Canadian heritage, proud of our healthcare and the commitment of Canadians to a strong social network. “I want no part of a future that embraces the current US government. I want to be part of a sovereign Canada, proud and free.”
V.S. says they would never support becoming part of the US in any way, shape or form. “I know we are not perfect but we are a lot closer to ideal than the US. Proud to be Canadian.”
T.B. says they love the mountains and Alberta landscape but they spent a lot of time in the US and “would welcome being the 51st state. If the Liberals stay in power I will permanently move to USA.”
R.F. says they are a dual citizen who moved to Calgary a year ago after 43 years in the States but they said the studies are clear. “Despite earning less money, Canadians are simply healthier, happier, and safer than Americans.” They said living in Canada has been an" “incredible breath of fresh air and I'm never going back!”
F.O. says Canada is their beautiful home after their grandparents left their war torn home and they are sick and tired of Trump’s threats. “We must stand together with the people that are tirelessly working behind the scenes,” they added.
T.R. says “never would I ever live in a country where it was ruled by Donald J Trump.”
C.H. says that if it came down to it, they would be the first to “walk into the war office and ask, ‘How can I help?’”
D.R. says “Canada is clean, beautiful (people and landscape), talented, artistic, gun control, humble, friendly, manners, generous, caring, unselfish and I could go on for days. I love this country and would never want to be anything else but Canadian.”
L.S. says it is an “emphatic NOWAYINHELL” to joining the US and that our country has its own culture, history, and value system from the US. But they believe that there have been some positives since the Trump talk began, including pride and national unity. “Canada is glorious and free and not for sale.”
S.G. says Canada is quite capable of standing on its own feet and “Canada is Canada and nothing else.”
A.C. appreciates some of the things Trump is doing but also feels that Canada shouldn't be giving this 51st state thing any attention at all. “Canada is our own country and should stay that way.”
M.C. is totally against Alberta or Canada becoming a part of the USA and believes “Danielle Smith is a Trump(wolf) in sheep’s clothing.”
G.B. says they love Canada because it is a beautiful, scenic country and there is lots to explore. However, they also spent a lot of time in the USA and “wouldn’t mind being one country” because they think it would benefit both countries.
