Calgary Citizen Newsletter Thursday Aug. 15

Good morning !

I made it home—kind of. I am so sorry the newsletter is late today - I ended up getting delayed and my luggage wasn’t with me and now this newsletter is a bit late. This was the original intro below, ironically!

Travel is so funny when you think about it and wow do I have some stories for you. I tend to get pulled in a lot no matter how sweet, polite and innocent I look, which results in many stories. My favourite might be when I was flying home from Vegas and somehow due to the fact I had headphones, an empty water bottle, a book, and batteries in my backpack, they thought I had a bomb on me! I got pulled aside and before I knew what was happening, I noticed a lot of shuffling and talking and one of the employees said “I can’t wait to see you on the news tonight” to her co-worker. Next thing I know, the “higher ups” came over and started gingerly and nervously going through my stuff while a group watched. When it was determined that I did not, in fact, have a bomb, they lectured me about packing those items together?! Anyways—nothing that exciting today though they did make me clear security twice. But I am back!

Calgary Humane Society seeks tips in ‘disturbing series of kitten abuse’

Warning: This story contains descriptions of animal abuse.

The Calgary Humane Society is warning feline owners to keep their cats indoors after a rash of “disturbing series of kitten abuse,” including the death of at least one. There are disturbing details in the links.

As Global News reports, on Monday, a dead kitten was found zip-tied to a fence in the southwest Calgary community of Kingsland. After an exam by a veterinarian, it was discovered that the kitten had suffered blunt force trauma to its abdomen and head. The Humane Society said that this case is the most recent in a series of similar events in the Sandy Beach and Kingsland areas this summer.

According to CTV, officials say seven kittens in total, all in the range of six to eight weeks old, have been found in public spaces in "various states of distress" since May 30. Of those, two are dead.

The Humane society is asking for anyone who may have information about the kitten abuse to come forward or call the Calgary Humane Society at 403-205-4455 or submit an online report.
