“Intended to stifle”: Mayor responds to tabled bill designed to give province oversight over municipal-federal agreements

Mayor Jyoti Gondek is responding to the Provincial Priorities Act tabled by Premier Danielle Smith. In a press conference, Gondek says the proposed legislation that would allow the province to have oversight over municipal-federal agreements would cause delays in funding and increase costs and uncertainty for municipalities across the province. If passed, the new law would require that any agreement between the federal government and an Alberta town, school board, university or other provincial entity be vetted by the provincial government first.

City News reports that the legislation is already in place in Quebec. “Albertans are uninterested in the virtue-signaling from Ottawa and the related strings that come with it. We are interested in our fair share of federal funding,” Smith said.

According to CBC, Gondek said the legislation is "intended to stifle Calgarians' ability to have their hard-earned tax dollars flow back into their communities." Meanwhile, Coun. Dan McLean told CBC he doesn’t have a problem with the bill.

As spring finally seems ready to stick around, you might want to check out this park

Central Commons Park is located at 4410 University Drive NW.

It might be accessible year-round but each season offers a different experience at University District’s three-acre public Central Commons Park that opened last year. Calgarians can enjoy this park no matter what the season is with an ice-skating rink for the winter and a stage area, picnic tables, BBQs, and more for spring, summer, and fall. We spoke with Civitas landscape designer Jessica Doig about the new park and what being outside can do for you after a long winter.

How does being outside impact your mental and physical well-being?

As landscape architects, we are huge advocates of spending time outside and using public spaces. The benefits of spending time outside are endless both physically and mentally by way of getting vitamin D from the sun, grounding, and getting fresh air; but it also brings a chance to strengthen and build relationships. As humans, we are part of nature and it is important for us to reconnect with it whenever we can. Getting outside throughout the year helps you feel connected to where you are and see a place in all its forms.

What do you hope people will take away from this space?

I hope people can make this place their own and feel as though it is their special place to visit with friends and family. I hope it gets used and loved by its community and becomes a place full of activity year-round. The location of the park and community were both large parts of the all-season design.
