Plus, St. Patty's events, pi/pie, and Flames blockbuster
Good morning !
I’m super excited to check out the Pallas Athena Women’s Fighting Championship’s biggest event of the year right here in Calgary on Saturday at Stampede Park’s Western Nutrien Event Centre. This exhilarating event is putting the spotlight on the world’s best female mixed martial arts fighters who will be putting their bodies, reputations, and championship belt on the line in a cage battle pitting the best of the best against one another. Pallas Athena is the only professional all-women mixed martial arts corporation in Western Canada and is set to become the #1 all-women MMA league in North America. MMA icons Cris Cyborg, Chuck Liddell, and Felicia Spencer are joining in on the fun to help promote the sport. Get your in-person tickets or, if you prefer, watch from home with pay-per-view. All eyes will be on the octagon this weekend!

Calgary’s Pie Junkies blends the worlds of math and baking as Pi Day nears
Pie Junkie is located in Mahogany’s Westman Village, Spruce Cliff, Kensington and Crowfoot Crossing. // Submitted
We are just a week away from International Pi Day (aka Albert Einstein's birthday) and that means Calgary-based Pie Junkie is celebrating its annual math meets baking tradition. For those not in the know, Pi Day is an annual celebration of the mathematical constant π (pi) and is observed on March 14 (the 3rd month) since 3, 1, and 4 are the first three significant figures of π.
Pie Junkie co-owner Nancy Goemans remembers the first day she heard about Pi Day because it fell on a Monday and her pie shop was closed as hungry math minds came knocking in search of “pi” pie. Since that day, Pie Junkie marks the day every year with a special treat.
“I wanted to create a place where people could come to find delicious homemade sweet and savoury pies. A true pie shop,” Goemans says, adding a pie shop celebrating pi day just makes sense. “After all, what better way to introduce a love of math to young minds than with a delicious pie.”
This year, Pie Junkie is offering limited edition slab pies that pay homage to the mathematical wonder of Pi with fun math and Pi-themed designs. These super-sized pies serve 24 and are perfect for any gathering. The pies are available by pre-order for one week only in key lime, chocolate, raspberry, and raspberry cheesecake flavours. A box of pre-made pastry numbers and Pi symbols is also available for those who want to decorate their pies at home.

It’s not too early to plan your St. Patrick’s Day so check out this list to spur your imagination
It’s St. Patrick’s Day in less than two weeks and there is no shortage of ways to celebrate throughout the city. Whether you enjoy adult events, family-friendly or something in between, there’s something for everyone this year. There are SO MANY options that we can’t list them all but here are a few on Sunday, March 17 to give you some ideas. Check the links for more info.
Family-friendly: Look out for Saint Patrick's Day events in Calgary that cater to families. These may include live music, traditional Irish food, cultural performances, and activities for children. Why not check out the St. Patrick’s Day Brunch at Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo. You could also strap on your skates and stride under the stars at Fort Calgary’s new outdoor rink alongside the illuminated Bow River with a beautiful view of the downtown skyline. If it’s not too soon for you to get outside, you’ll want to check out the Original St. Patrick’s Day Road Race where more than 1,000 runners will hit the snow-covered pavement for the first big race of the year.
Adult Irish-themed activities: It’s one of the busiest days of the year for bars and there is NO SHORTAGE of events across the city this year. You might want to check out the St.Patrick’s Day Shenanigans at National on 10th and the best part is the tickets are only $5 and include free bowling, karaoke, and arcade games. Feeling lucky? Join Rec Room (for no entry fee) for snacks, sips, shenanigans, live Celtic music, and, of course, games. For those who live in the northwest, check out Brewsters Crowfoot for a day of green beer, good vibes, and Irish cheer!
