Alberta's October 19 referendum is coming up faster than you might think, and Elections Alberta has released some practical information about how the whole thing will work.

There will be ten questions in total, each on its own colour-coded ballot. You'll receive all ten at once and deposit them into separate ballot boxes. The separation question — Question 10 — will be handed out first and counted first. Elections Alberta is expecting roughly 34 million ballots to be used across the province.

Voting works much like a provincial election, with advance voting, Election Day voting, and mail-in special ballots all available. To be eligible, you need to be a Canadian citizen, ordinarily resident in Alberta, and at least 18 years old. Bring ID — either one piece of government-issued photo ID with your name, address, and photo, or two pieces showing your name and current address.

One thing worth knowing: Elections Alberta is looking to recruit 60,000 or more Albertans to work as election officers. Recruitment kicks off June 8, positions are paid, and most are open to anyone 16 or older who is eligible to work in Canada.

Elections Alberta has also launched a new Election Integrity section on its website to help voters spot misinformation and disinformation, including new rules around deepfakes.
