Good morning {{ first name}}!

On Tuesday, we asked whether school bus transportation should be fully funded by the province — and the answer was overwhelmingly yes. Readers pointed out that school boundaries are set by the province, not parents, so it's hard to argue families should foot the bill. One reader put it simply: for many kids, the school bus isn't a convenience, it's a safety net.

Alberta's October referendum: here's how it works

Photo: Unsplash

Alberta's October 19 referendum is coming up faster than you might think, and Elections Alberta has released some practical information about how the whole thing will work.

There will be ten questions in total, each on its own colour-coded ballot. You'll receive all ten at once and deposit them into separate ballot boxes. The separation question — Question 10 — will be handed out first and counted first. Elections Alberta is expecting roughly 34 million ballots to be used across the province.

Voting works much like a provincial election, with advance voting, Election Day voting, and mail-in special ballots all available. To be eligible, you need to be a Canadian citizen, ordinarily resident in Alberta, and at least 18 years old. Bring ID — either one piece of government-issued photo ID with your name, address, and photo, or two pieces showing your name and current address.

One thing worth knowing: Elections Alberta is looking to recruit 60,000 or more Albertans to work as election officers. Recruitment kicks off June 8, positions are paid, and most are open to anyone 16 or older who is eligible to work in Canada.

Elections Alberta has also launched a new Election Integrity section on its website to help voters spot misinformation and disinformation, including new rules around deepfakes.

The Terry Fox Ride of Hope is coming to Calgary

The Terry Fox Foundation's annual Ride of Hope is coming to Calgary on Sunday, July 12, and cyclists of all experience levels are welcome to take part.

Now in its 12th year, the Ride of Hope is a collection of community cycling fundraisers taking place across seven provinces this summer, all organized by volunteers and inspired by Terry Fox's iconic Marathon of Hope. Every dollar raised goes directly toward cancer research through the Marathon of Hope Cancer Centres Network, a pan-Canadian initiative connecting researchers, oncologists, and patient partners to advance precision medicine.

This year, the Foundation is introducing three new "Terry Tough" challenges — elevated cycling events designed to honour Terry's determination — including one in Alberta. There is no registration fee, and cyclists can find their local ride or create their own at terryfox.org/terry-fox-ride-of-hope.

Since its launch in 2015, the Ride of Hope has raised more than $2.25 million for cancer research across Canada.

Where to eat and drink

🍴 Peter's Drive-In: A Calgary institution since 1962, Peter's has been serving burgers and milkshakes on the Trans-Canada Highway for more than six decades. The lineup around the block is a permanent fixture — they sold 4,000 milkshakes in a single day last summer.

🍴 Maven: A beloved brunch spot on 17th Avenue, Maven draws a loyal crowd with creative eggs benedict inspired by Filipino cuisine, house buttermilk pancakes, and house-made pastries. A consistently great morning out.
