QUICK POLL
Alberta is spending $200 million on modular classrooms to address overcrowding — what do you think?
Alberta is pouring $200 million into modular classrooms
Alberta's government is investing $200 million this year to add modular classrooms to schools across the province, as rapidly growing student enrolment puts pressure on existing facilities. The funding will deliver 189 new modular classrooms and roughly 5,450 new student spaces in the communities with the greatest need.
The investment is part of a broader $600 million, three-year commitment, which itself falls under the $8.6-billion Schools Now program — a larger effort to create or modernize more than 200,000 student spaces across Alberta by 2031-32.
Calgary is among the biggest recipients. The Calgary Board of Education is set to receive 46 new modular classrooms, adding more than 1,100 learning spaces across 10 schools. The Calgary Catholic School District will receive 12 new classrooms, five replacements, and nine relocations.
The province points to rapid population growth as the driver, noting more than 80,000 new students have entered Alberta classrooms over just three years. Calgary Board of Education chair Laura Hack put the scale of the investment in perspective: "Forty-six modular classrooms add more than 1,100 learning spaces across 10 schools, nearly the equivalent of two elementary schools. This means more students can attend school closer to home."
Modular classrooms are seen as a faster solution while permanent school construction continues — they typically become operational within eight to twelve months.

💔 The search for 82-year-old Calgary woman Diane Cooper, who had been missing since April 7, came to a heartbreaking end on Saturday when RCMP found her near Kindersley, Saskatchewan. Her dog Halo was found safe.
🎵 Cowboys Music Festival is returning to Cowboys Park from July 2-12, but Ward 7 Coun. Myke Atkinson is raising concerns about the impact on the skate park and surrounding community. The city says this year's closure will be smaller than last year's, with the beginner bowl remaining open.
🏘️ Calgary has repealed its citywide rezoning bylaw, and the conversation has shifted to what comes next. Local area plans and nodes-and-corridors development are among the most commonly supported replacement approaches from the public hearing.
🧹 Calgary's annual street sweeping program kicked off yesterday, with crews working weekdays through June across more than 17,000 lane-kilometres of roadway. Watch for No Parking signs two to three days before crews arrive in your area.
🔥 Three homes were damaged and 10 residents evacuated after a fire broke out in the Citadel neighbourhood Sunday afternoon. No injuries were reported and the investigation is ongoing.

Calgary's home for music is marking a decade since it opened its doors on Canada Day 2016, and the National Music Centre has a full year of events lined up to mark the occasion.
The highlights start this spring. PlayLab, a hands-on sound playground for kids and families, opens May 6. Over the summer, EddyFest runs August 14-16, celebrating more than 120 years of music history at the legendary King Eddy. And the official birthday bash lands on Canada Day, with a Sharon, Lois & Bram singalong among the festivities.
Fall brings the Canadian Music Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony to the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium on October 3, while Joni's Jazz — an exploration of Joni Mitchell's relationship with the genre — is slated for Spring 2027.
Since opening, Studio Bell has welcomed more than one million visitors and houses four national music halls of fame. NMC president Andrew Mosker noted the milestone carries special meaning given how many once doubted a national music hub could succeed outside of Canada's largest cities.
