Good morning {{ first name}}!
Last week we asked what amenity you'd most like to see in your neighbourhood, and the answer was pretty clear: all of the above.
Readers want pools, libraries, green space, and outdoor amenities. And as Calgary's population grows, the case for accessible, multi-use community hubs only gets stronger. One reader also made a strong case for a good coffee shop in the mix, which honestly seems reasonable.
👀 In today's edition:
Alberta is lowering the mammography screening age — but not until 2027
Hundreds were stranded on a northern Alberta highway in a spring blizzard

A rooftop toast to 30 years of community impact
Two Calgary organizations are marking a shared milestone this spring: 30 years of community impact and a long-standing partnership that both say is all too rare.
About Staffing, a for-profit recruitment firm, and Safe Haven Foundation of Canada, a nonprofit supporting girls and young women at risk of homelessness, will celebrate the occasion at Pearls & Prosecco, a rooftop fundraiser at the Calgary Marriott Downtown Hotel on May 29, bringing together 300 guests from Calgary's business and philanthropic communities.
The two organizations have played distinct but complementary roles in the city. About Staffing has spent 30 years connecting Calgarians to work across industries, reinvesting a portion of its revenue into community initiatives. Safe Haven has walked alongside girls and young women experiencing or at risk of homelessness, providing housing, education pathways, and long-term support. Calgarians are invited to join the celebration and be part of what comes next.
Both are women-led, and both say their partnership reflects something they'd like to see more of — sustained, evolving collaboration between the for-profit and nonprofit sectors with measurable community outcomes.
"About Staffing has been supporting Safe Haven from the very beginning," said Krystyna Lloyd, CEO of Safe Haven. "They have shown up not just in moments of growth, but in the moments that required resilience and belief."
Need to know
🏥 Alberta plans to lower the age for free self-referred mammograms from 45 to 40, making more than 193,000 additional women eligible — but the change doesn't take effect until April 2027, and advocates are pushing for an earlier start date.
🌨️ Hundreds of motorists were stranded on Highway 63 south of Fort McMurray for up to 24 hours during a spring blizzard last week, with some reporting no food, water, or communication from authorities. The province says the storm's severity caught everyone off guard.
🏫 Calgary's public school boards are receiving nearly $6 million in provincial funding for safety upgrades, but a Calgary Catholic trustee called it "a drop in the bucket," estimating his district alone needs $25 million just to reach a baseline standard.
🇨🇦 An Indigenous-led rally at Calgary City Hall on Saturday called for Alberta to remain in Canada ahead of the fall referendum, with organizer Nicole Johnston saying treaty rights cannot be bypassed by any separation proposal.
🚌 A city report says extending Calgary Transit's transfer window from 90 to 120 minutes would cost $2 million annually and benefit less than two per cent of riders, and could result in eliminating new service planned for September 2026.

The Calgary Philharmonic’s spring line-up
The Calgary Philharmonic has a packed spring ahead, with three distinct concerts hitting the Jack Singer Concert Hall in May.
First up is Alberta in Harmony: The Planets, a joint performance with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra on May 2. More than 125 musicians from Alberta's two professional orchestras will share the stage, conducted by Naomi Woo, for a program featuring John Luther Adams' Become Ocean and Gustav Holst's beloved planetary suite. Both the Edmonton and Calgary dates are sold out.
On May 8, conductor Cosette Justo Valdés returns to lead Postcards from Italy, a musical travelogue featuring works by Stravinsky, Respighi, and Mendelssohn — each piece evoking the sights, characters, and landscapes of Italy in its own way.
Closing out the month, conductor Earl Lee leads the orchestra on May 22 and 23 in Mahler's First Symphony, a sweeping orchestral epic that moves from the joys of springtime through to triumphant resolution. The concert also features Robert Schumann's Cello Concerto, performed by distinguished British cellist Steven Isserlis in his first ever appearance with the Calgary Phil.
Where to eat and drink

Founded by Bill and Rani, the family-owned restaurant has become a familiar landmark for Calgarians in the mood for fragrant curries and fresh naan.
🍴 Lazy Loaf & Kettle: A cozy Parkdale café known for its sandwiches, Lazy Loaf & Kettle bakes its own bread in-house and lets you build your own creation or go with a classic like the tuna melt, barbecue brisket, or spicy grilled chicken.
