Suhaib Hasmi, a Grade 12 student at Robert Thirsk High School in Calgary, has been named one of just 20 recipients across Canada of the TD Scholarship for Community Leadership, earning up to $70,000 toward his post-secondary education.

Having experienced homelessness as a child, Hasmi turned that early instability into a mission to build safe, welcoming spaces for vulnerable youth. At Calgary's Al-Salam Centre, he co-founded the Al-Salam Youth Club, unifying previously separate boys' and girls' programs into one inclusive group focused on personal development for children in Grades 1 to 6. The club supports kids affected by displacement, family crisis, and marginalization.

The TD Scholarship for Community Leadership has recognized students with outstanding commitment to their communities since 1995. In addition to the scholarship funding, recipients receive paid summer employment opportunities, peer networking, and mentorship.
