There’s a new performing arts organization in town and its debut production of the Tony Award-winning musical The Bridges of Madison County is on April 12 and 13 at Studio Theatre at cSPACE. The Nightingale Arts Collective is a talented group of professional vocalists and musicians led by prominent musical director John Goulart, who is also the director of the Bow Valley Chorus and Firebird Symphony and Chorus. The show will be presented in concert format to reduce production and ticket costs. With minimal costuming and set design, the music takes centre stage bringing the audience along on the emotional four-day love story between the characters Robert and Francesca.

Former CPS HR director is being sued by police chief after allegations of harassment, bullying

Police Chief Mark Neufeld has filed a lawsuit against a woman who worked as the CPS’s former director of human resources after she made comments on social media with allegations of harassment and bullying while she worked there. Angela Whitney was employed from 2019 to 2021 when she resigned following a medical leave of absence. Now, Whitney has been sharing the allegations publicly on social media.

In an interview with Global News, Whitney described a culture rife with harassment, bullying and discrimination that ran counter to best practices in human resources. According to the statement of claim Neufeld filed on March 20, Whitney’s comments “have caused, and will continue to cause irreparable harm to CPS.”

According to CityNews, the Calgary Police Commission has asked for an external review of CPS in relation to the allegations during a meeting on Wednesday. While the commission has been publicly tracking the CPS workplace culture since 2011, officials say that recommendations were not successfully implemented after a previous workplace review in 2013.

Calgary Stampeder shares his experience visiting children in the Philippines through World Vision

It may be off-season for the CFL but Calgary Stampeder Reggie Begelton joined eight other players in the Philippines through the World Vision Canada CFL Ambassador program. The global advocacy organization focuses on helping the world’s most vulnerable girls and boys overcome poverty. During the 10-day trip, Begelton visited local schools to read to the school children, learn a few local games, and teach them how to play football. They also met local families. We spoke with Begelton who shared his first-hand account of the experience.

What would you like Calgarians to know most about the living conditions of those children?

I was humbled by our visit to the homes of several schoolchildren. One home I visited had one bed, a simple kitchen and a rocky floor. While the home was dramatically different from Canadian and American homes, one similarity was that it was filled with love and laughter. The courage and resilience of the people I met during my visit demonstrated that all people are capable of making the best of every situation and can proceed to live a meaningful life that focuses on the good instead of adversity.

How important is it for people to have these types of experiences there and what can be done to help?

I understand that many Canadians are struggling and it’s not easy to make ends meet. When I was a child, my family struggled financially as well. But what I witnessed during my visit to the Philippines put things into a new perspective. I wish everyone could see the harsh and daunting reality of daily life for the children and families we met. I returned home with a great sense of gratitude for the good things I have in my life and an even stronger commitment to spreading the word about how World Vision Canada is making the world a better place.
