The mysterious case of the foul smell near Calgary’s airport has been solved. So, what is it?

Shutterstock

if you’ve been wondering what that awful stench is around the Calgary International Airport, your questions have been answered. A foul smell emanating near the airport poses no risk to residents, airport officials say.

As Global News reports, it may not be aromatic but at least it’s not dangerous. In a statement posted to social media, airport officials said the odours “do not present a risk to public health or the environment.”

According to CTV News, officials for the Calgary Airport Authority said the stink is mainly coming from glycol, which is used to de-ice planes during the winter. Rotting sediment and organic matter in storm water ponds at the airport can also emit a sulphurous smell.

Officials say the annual strategy of storm-water restoration and maintenance has helped combat the lingering odour.

Local filmmaker’s film set to screen in Calgary theatre this week

Hailey Rose is playing at Eau Claire Market theatre starting today. // Submitted

Calgary filmmaker Sandi Somers grew up in Nova Scotia where she studied at Dalhousie University before becoming a designer of set costumes and lighting. That’s what brought her to Calgary and kickstarted her film career. Her movie Hailey Rose is screening at Eau Claire Market’s theatre starting today. Set on the beautiful Nova Scotia coast, the film is a contemporary family comedy about love in all its expressions. (Watch the trailer!) Hailey Rose has screened at festivals across the country, including the Calgary International Film Festival. We spoke with Somers about her film screening in Calgary.

What can you tell readers about your film?

Hailey Rose is a very funny drama that takes place within the beautiful scenery of Nova Scotia, it has brilliant performances by Canadian actors and its soundtrack is drawn from some of Alberta and Nova Scotia’s favourite singer-songwriters. Hailey's at a personal crossroads when her frantic sister calls with news compelling her to return home—only to discover a stunning surprise waiting for her. A tragic yet heart-warming tale about running away, facing your past and accepting your loved ones, old and new.

What can you say about how your film has been received?

One of the things that I love is that Canadian and US festival audiences hang around after the screenings and talk to me about relationships within their families. I love hearing the stories and how the film affects people in such different ways, and I love all the laughter and tears that are experienced.

What's next for you?

I always have something on the go! I’m writing two features that I hope will continue to fill the next few years of my life in a creative way. I’m also headed up north this winter to work on a film as a creative producer. And, I’m doing research for an upcoming documentary.
