It’s official; meet your new city council
Calgary’s new council is now official and it’s time to get to work — after the swearing-in ceremony that is.
While the election was held Monday, the results are official as of noon today and council will be sworn in on Monday during the Organizational Meeting of Council, which Calgarians can watch live from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
“I would like to thank all of the election workers and citizens who participated in the 2021 General Election. It was our goal to deliver a safe, accessible and compliant election, which was possible due to your efforts,” said Kate Martin, Returning Officer with Elections Calgary.
“I would like to specifically thank voters for their patience as some voting stations experienced long lineups on Election night as we worked to ensure a safe and compliant process for voters. I appreciate your interest in being part of the democratic process.”
Voter turnout for the 2021 Calgary General Election was 393,090 for a total voter turnout of 46%. There were 847,556 enumerated electors as of July 2021 per the Elections Alberta Permanent Register of Electors.
Calgarians were also asked if they are in favour of reintroducing fluoridation of the municipal water supply. There were 204,457 YES votes and 127,483 NO votes.
While it’s not binding, council will likely use the plebiscite to make their decisions going forward.
Results from the 2021 Alberta Senate Election and referendum questions will be posted online after Oct. 26.
