Featured Calgary Citizen: Christine Karebwayire

Nominated by one of our incredible Calgary Citizen readers, we are thrilled to feature Christine Karebwayire as today’s featured Calgary Citizen.

Christine has lived in Calgary for the last 22 years, currently residing with her family in Signal Hill in the SW quadrant of the city. She’s a wife, a mother, a nurse, and a born-again Christian who loves her community and is one of the most caring people you will ever meet. She even founded the Seniors Life Centre in Calgary to help vulnerable seniors in her country, Rwanda.

We sat down with Christine to learn more about her experience moving to Calgary and what she loves about the city — particularly the people.

What do you love about living in Calgary?

“I like how Calgarian people are generous in helping and supporting each other, especially those in need. The Calgary community offers many different activities to everyone regarding the different ages, beliefs, and culture.”

What brought you here?

“Safety and opportunity, especially education.”

What makes Calgary feel like home?

“That is a good question, I have lived in Calgary for half of my life. I got married, had my children, my career, and founded Seniors Life Centre in Calgary. Basically, Calgary is where I started my life after being away from my parents.”

What does it mean to be a Calgarian?

“To be Calgarian is to be kind and neighbourly. It’s a blessing to me and to all to be a Calgarian.”

What do you love about your community?

“I love how the Calgary community has different resources to meet Calgarians’ needs. I also love how the City of Calgary helps its community in archiving their goals.”

What does community mean to you?

“To me, community is where people work together, care and help one another, and share the similarities and differences.”

What do you think unites us as Calgarians?

“I believe the Calgarian spirit of being welcoming and helping each other unites us.”
