Murder suicide, $10 clothing, and girl's wrestling

Good morning !

We have a skunk problem in our community (Mckenzie Towne) and my dogs and I have been sprayed not once but twice in one week. Let me tell you—the acidic smell is unmistakable and I don’t know if I will ever truly get rid of the stench. I was surprised to learn that despite these cute but pesky critters taking over the streets, alleys, our yards in the community, it’s not an issue that the city will help with. I could understand if it was contained to my yard, but these little critters are all over the place in the community and they’re hard to avoid. Have you noticed more skunks this year?

Elite wrestling club focuses on giving females a chance to shine on the wrestling mat

Since 1994, coach Michael Dunn has run the Roc Wrestling Club, which is hailed as one of the best youth wrestling programs in the country. Recently, Roc Wrestling split into two different clubs: the Alberta Elite Women’s Wrestling Club as a girls-only team, and the Roc as a boys-only team.

Generally, clubs around Canada combine girls and boys, but Dunn and his team wanted to try a new tactic to get more girls into wrestling. Boys involved in wrestling equate to “about one third to about two thirds or 30 to 70” in Alberta, according to Dunn.

We're just looking to grow the club and make it the strongest yet. We basically are the strongest girls club in the country already. We're trying to give girls from the ages of eight to 18 a chance to be part of the group and to be awesome at wrestling.”

While the team's recent success is largely due to the skill of the girls, Dunn and his team have worked hard to prepare them to be their best. Wrestling is different from other team sports such as soccer in which players communicate with each other and work together towards objectives. They either win together or lose together. In wrestling, it is just two people against each other.

“It's quite demanding emotionally when you're heavy into the match and someone is on you trying to hold you down and take you down. These things are very difficult to overcome at times,” Dunn says.

However, Dunn believes these challenges are what set his students up for success. With its recent achievements, the club has become a model for other wrestling programs in the country. Read the full story in the link below.

Ten Dollar Clothing was founded on the principles of affordability and sustainability. // Instagram

Did you know there is a clothing store in Calgary where items are priced at $10 or less. The goal is to help Calgarians revamp their closet with affordable pieces that don’t break the bank while not compromising quality or style. Located in Vista Heights on 32 Avenue NE, Ten Dollar Clothing is dedicated to helping customers shop on a budget. We caught up with the owner of Ten Dollar Clothing to learn more about its mission when it first opened.

Tell us about Ten Dollar Clothing?

Ten Dollar Clothing was an idea founded upon the principles of affordability and sustainability. With recent events such as COVID, the inflation rates along with pricing hikes crushed the dreams of many. Many were unable to afford basic needs items such as food and clothing. Ten Dollar Clothing allowed me to provide an affordable alternative to consumers.

How are you able to sell for $10 or less?

Before Ten Dollar Clothing was launched, we spent countless days and hours looking into our suppliers. We searched and contacted many suppliers who would be a good fit for our store. Ultimately, we finalized it down to the ones who would fit our brand image the best by providing us with high-quality and low-cost goods for us to provide to our customers.

What types of clothes do you sell?

We sell a variety of clothes for kids, men and ladies which all range from sizes XS - 3XL. With our trusted suppliers, we have kept quality standards high ensuring we provide good products to our customers.

How will your store benefit Calgarians?

Our store will provide an affordable alternative to Calgarians looking to revamp their closet as we have many branded pieces of clothing that we ultimately sell as the name suggests at $10 only. Providing Calgarians a way to shop without burdening their wallet in these times is the value that we want to provide to our lovely city!
